  1. Family Stress Theory
Having read about the family stress theory has caused me to understand the different stages of stress which families go through. Before now I use to view it as some family problem which they tries to solve as a unit.
I believe that all families encountered stressor at some point in their lives. A stressor can be negative and positive it depends on the situation. For example having a child can be a positive stressor for a grown woman who wants to have a baby. While for a teenager who is still in school having a child may be a negative stressor. For example a young teenager who lives in a single parent home where only the mother alone is providing financial support. The mother spends all she has to ensure that the child is well comfortable while investing in a good education so that one day she may become an independent person. Now this young girl deceives her mother’s trust and got pregnant for an unproductive young man. The pregnancy now becomes the stressor in the family. The girl’s education will have to be put on hold for a while. Her mom now has to provide for two children instead of one. According to the theory the first stage is the crisis, for this example it would be the discovery of the pregnancy. Then the next stage would be the disorganization phase where the mother becomes very upset about the discovery and trying to cope with the situation. The child may be embarrassed to the point where she is suicidal. She will therefore need support from family or friends. The next stage is the recovery phase where the family plans how to deal with the situation and make the necessary arrangement for the unborn child. They may arrange for the boy’s mother to keep the child while the teenager goes back to school to complete her academic goal. The next stage is the reorganization phase where the girl had planned to restart her life and promise not to make the same mistake again.
When families are going through stressful periods they need each other for support and so the theory refers to these as resources. The question that this theory has raised in my mind is what if families do not reach to the recovery phase? Will the stressor be a continuous one?

    1. Good question but if families do not reach recovery phase then they need professional help. Some persons take alonger time to reach recovery phase than others. If the stressor is a continuos one then it can create more stress on the family as the person who is stressed may get ill.

  2. The family stress theory closely examines how the family handles stress as it passes through its four stages. The four stages mentioned by this theory are crisis, disorganization, recovery then reorganization.
This micro theory like any other theory is based on assumptions and so it used an ABC-X model to explain the theory. This model summarizes A-the stressor, B-the resources, C-the situation and X- the stress and the crisis. How well the family handles the stressor; use the available resources and examines the situation will be the determinant of whether the family will face stress or a crisis. According to this theory family crisis is as a result of stress being mismanaged.
Since you asked, why is it so usual for some families to collapse by the death of a family member? The fundamental premises of the Family Stress theory, is that families must follow the four stages when faced with problems. While death is a natural stressor there are artificial stressors for example losing your taxi (only means of survival) due to careless overtaking. When there is crisis in the family, it causes disorganization. For example when the lady who used to do my laundries had died there was a major crisis as everyone had an emotional breakdown. She was from a poor socio-economic background and so everyone was disorganized running looking finances for the burial. Now, having gotten all the funds solves the crisis; everything fell into place and the family was restored. Therefore families will have to sort out their stressors find solutions to solidify thus reorganize.
I personally find this theory to be very instrumental as I can help families’ go through the many crises they face.

  3. The stress theory focuses on how the family on a whole deal with stress. When a family is dealing with stress they go through different stages of crisis, which includes crisis, disorganization, recovery and re-organization. They decide how well they handled the stress. Whether it may be negative or positive, we all encounter all of us have had stressor events. The ABC-x model was designed by the family stress theorists to describe what people go through when they are dealing with stress.
In my family the main stressor was when my mother got ill. This of course was the crisis. After knowing and understanding the nature of her illness it had a negative impact on the family. The family was now at the disorganization stage. Even though the stressor was gradual it was very painful. I remember leaving school during break time to visit her at the hospital. I turned up at the hospital a particular day and found her very weak. She asked me to bathe her; she had to hold on to the shower curtain rails for support. This was very stressful for me and my family there was nothing we could do to help. We pooled together our resources before and after she died, to take care of medical expenses and also funeral expenses. For us the coping strategy was to continue to maintain a close relationship with each other. During our recovery, we also got the support of close friends and co-workers who helped us to cope during our time of grief. At one point I thought I was going to be in that situation for the rest of my life, until I returned to work, I hardly ever have time to think about what had happened. The four stages of the theory were complete as we started reorganizing. We were able to handle our stressor well. Going to the country and not seen my mother no longer affects me. I have learnt how to cope with stress and balance my personal and social life.

  4. FAMILY STRESS THEORY

The family stress theory focuses on how any family handle stress. This theory indicates that the family passes through different stages in life. These stages are crisis, disorganization, recovery and reorganization. This theory focuses on the ABC-X model. When using this model A represent the stressor, B indicates the resources that the family or individual would need to deal with the crisis. In the model C explains the definition of the situation and how you view the stressor. The way we see it can be negative, positive or neutral. X in this model is dependent on how any family deals with B and C in the model.
The family stress theory can be applied to my family to some extent. In my family using the ABC-X model the stressor is the hospitalization of my father due to the actions of dishonest people. I view the stressor in a negative light. The stressor affects all members of my family negatively. The resources in this crisis include money, emotional and moral support. For me, the coping strategy is to be positive and provide good medical care, moral and emotional support for all members of my family. I view the situation as cruel, but try to stay positive at all times.
Even though I am optimistic X in this model is not exactly the way I want it therefore in my opinion AB and C was not handled to the best of my ability which result in the failing of my family in worlds perspective test.

  5. Family Stress Theory
In the family stress system states that families pass through four stages of crisis. They are crisis, disorganization, recovery and reorganization. The theory also describes how a family deals with stress. An ABC-X model is develop to deal with stress in the family.
A is said to be the stressor where it’s neither positive nor negative but the way one views the stress depends on the individuals whether they see the stress being good or bad. For instance, I know of this nuclear family were there is only one child in the in the family as a result this child gets everything her want. However the love and attention wasn’t enough for him as he got himself involve into smoking marijuana. His brain could not manage the drug so now he is bad. His parents were spending all their saving on him to facilitate his education as they consider him to be their “old age pension”.
B entails the resource while C is definition of the situation. This is how one fined the resources and deals with the stress while C is how you cope after one is been face with stress. Now the family is not coping with the male illness and money has become limited as priority has to be set to get treatment for the child. The extended family now has to be involved in helping to deals with the stress.
X is the stressor or crisis. The family his faced with this unplanned crisis of the child being mad instead of work hard to achieve a good education.
The four stages of crisis can be identified as the child taking drugs is the crisis, the disorganization is the problem of taking care of the child as both parents work, the recovery his other family members intervening to help with the child and the reorganization is helping the child getting better.
I am in total argument with this theory as it shows how when a family stays together and work together crisis and stress can be dealt with productively.

  6. The Family Stress Theory
This theory makes reference to how families’ deals with stress, and the stages they go through to solve the stress as a family. They uses a ABC-X model to solve the stress,A which is the stressor B the resources that are needed to allow the family to refocus ,C the definition of the situation or stress X is the stress and crisis .According to this theory a stressor is anything that causes individuals to be pressured which can be negative or positive.
For me the family is the leading contributors of stress that occurs in families .I have a brother who is very stubborn and one that is not in the best of health (epilepsy) he constantly gets himself into trouble or situation which he is unable to get out of ,so therefore my mother is always there to help him ,which sometimes poses a problem for her as most times his situations are money related. Other members of the family strongly agree that she should leave him to solve the problem and eventually he would learn from his mistakes.
On the other hand families do who work together to deal with stress ,depending on the degree of stress they sometimes seek advice from outside of the family. When my grandmother died most if not all of her children came together ,delaying their differences to plan for the funeral arrangement each person takes on a role so that the burial would be possible ,if that was not done a member are some members would be pressured to take on the added expenses.I do agree with this theory that if families come together put their differences aside stress would not be so dominant.

  7. Family Stress Theory
The family stress theory or the coping theory focuses on how families handle stress or crisis. Within all families there are existing stress or crisis that affects the function of the family. The way in which the family handle these issues are very important because it can proves whether it will break or pulls the family closer. This theory helps the family to understand the stress of balancing work, family and personal life. For e.g. within my family we have to determining the important aspects to balance and also the stress of the death of a love one. Hence the working members must give their best towards their work, take care of the family and also ensure that their personal lives are involved as well, while planning funeral arrangements.
However, in coping with this crisis the family must pass through stages of the crisis. These includes: a) facing the crisis, b) going through the disorganization process- This involves some aspect of the daily route will have to be altered to fit each daily schedule .Hence, the time to do the funeral arrangement will clash with work hours. c) The recovery process, therefore the family needs to get together because they will not allow the time to catch up on them and the funeral planning are not in place. This will hamper more stress. d) The reorganization process, this involves organizing the schedule to fit all daily activities in order to carry out the necessary functions. Therefore after the funeral has passed the family needs to set things in order to move forward and prepare for present events to keep the family operating normally. In addition whenever these strategies are implemented it will help to alleviate the many crises that rock the foundation of the family.

  8. Family Stress Theory

    The Family Stress Theory focuses on how families handle stress. When there is a crisis in the family the family passes through four stages;
    • Crises
    • Disorganization
    • Recovery
    • Reorganization

Some years ago my great grandmother died. This was a major crises for my family. This was a natural stressor, however, this crises came about as a surprise to everyone. This sudden death was unexpected so it caused disorganization in the family. My great grandmother was the person that took care of my smaller brother while my mother worked. This caused disorganization because my mother not only lost her grandmother but she also lost the person that took care of her son. The funeral arrangements in its initial stage also caused disorganization in the planning and the financing. Nevertheless recovery came when my other family members came to Jamaica and helped with the planning and gave money towards the funeral arrangements.
Our family had to depend on individual, family and community resources combined to cope during this stressful situation. Such resources included; perseverance, patience, money, support, counseling etc. Most family members had a similar definition of our great grandmothers death and because of this the foundation of our family was rocked. Family members stopped talking to each other, constant arguing and confrontation was a everyday problem.

It took about a year before we felt a sense of reorganization in our family.

  9. This theory speaks about crisis and categories it into four stages, which are crisis, disorganization, recovery and reorganization. The crisis is the problem or stressor that presents itself, disorganization is how the family deals with the problem, recovery is the solutions in order to solve the problem and reorganization is how well you adapt to the situation and carry out your daily lives.
A model was developed to better understand the theory. Model A- stressor, B-resources,
C-definition of the situation and X- stress and crisis.
Very recently there was a death in the family and it brought great stress to the family as resources were limited to bury the family member and everyone had to come together to pool savings to make decisions concerning the funeral arrangement, the family did not cope well as this member was the “back bone” of the family.
The four categories here respond to the crisis being the death in the family with no money to bury my aunt, the disorganization were financial arrangement had to be sorted out and persons were in disagreement with the final arrangements, the recovery was mending back the pieces with the family as a whole and the reorganization where how well we went about our regular daily routines although we terribly missed our loving aunt.
I support this theory has when families are faced with bad situations once they work together to solved the problem and the responsibility is not left on one individual it is beneficial to all.
